This meeting between Red Bull Salzburg and Real Madrid marked a series of firsts. It is the first time that the two sides lock horns and is also the club’s maiden visit to Salzburg’s Red Bull Arena, a stadium that opened its doors in 2003 and boasts a 30,000-plus capacity. Indeed, we have to go back to the pre-season of the 2008/09 campaign for the Whites’ last game in Austria. That contest was played in Irdning and ended in a 3-2 win over Lask Linz.

The club’s official website said

Zidane is set to make the most of this evening’s clash and Sunday’s meeting with Roma to continue to fine-tune the team’s preparations ahead of the Matchday 1 clash against Celta on 17 August. The Whites’ aim will be to continue to get up to speed ahead of the start of the season proper. In their last pre-season game, the Whites ran out 5-3 winners over Fenerbahçe with Karim Benzema helping himself to a hat-trick.

The opposition

For their part, Red Bull Salzburg have opened their Austrian Bundesliga campaign with two wins from two. They’ve claimed the league title in each of the past six seasons and Jesse Marsch’s troops will take their place in the group stage of the 2019/20 Champions League with Real Madrid set to pit their wits against Champions League opposition as they continue their pre-season preparations.

The game against Red Bull Salzburg ended in 1-0 in favor of Real Madrid with Hazard being the only scorer of the night.

The player himself (Eden Hazard) was pleased with the outcome

I’d been waiting for this moment for the last five games and it’s happened today. I’m very pleased.
