Real Madrid were crowned champions of Copa del Rey (CDR) in the last edition held in Malaga in 2014.
The Basketball Copa del Rey is here and Real Madrid go in to the event to be held in Malaga from 13 to 16 February as the kings of the competition, with 27 titles to their name.
The aim of the Whites is to repeat the success of the last time the event was held at the Martín Carpena six years ago, when they won against Barcelona with a basket by Llull in the last second.
Real Madrid will start their involvement on Thursday against Bilbao Basket in a quarterfinal that has never been played before (9pm CET). In case of victory, their opponents in the semifinals will be the winners of Barça-Valencia Basket.
Six years have passed since Felipe Reyes lifted the club’s 24th Copa del Rey in Malaga. Since then, Real Madrid has played in every finals and won in Gran Canaria 2015, La Coruña 2016 and Vitoria 2017.
Records within the reach of the madridistas
In terms of names, Pablo Laso and Reyes could become the most successful coach and player in the history of the competition. The Whites’ coach, who has the best winning percentage in the tournament (22 in 25 games and 88 per cent), has five titles and is level with Aíto García Reneses.
THE QUARTERFINAL AGAINST BILBAO BASKET WILL BE PLAYED ON THURSDAY AT 9:30PM (CET).
The captain, for his part, will play in the cup for the 16th time with the Whites. He has won it six times and wants to break the tie with Navarro.
Llull and Rudy
Reyes is the player with the most matches played in the cup (48), Llull the third (29) and Rudy the seventh (27). The forward is one match away from Andrés Jiménez and two from Sergi Vidal and Rafa Jofresa.
The captain of Real Madrid is second in minutes played (950), 23 from Navarro (973) and fourth in points (438), 16 from Epi. His teammates Llull and Rudy are also in the top-10 along with other Whites legends such as Arlauckas (398) and Herreros (375).
